Dry Bulk Oatmeal Recipe On the Cheap

As mentioned last week, a big part of our morning routine includes oatmeal because it’s quick, it’s filling, and it’s CHEAP. Although there are several ways we enjoy eating our oatmeal (check out our Oatmeal pin board for ideas) the one I fall back on most is a bulk Maple and Brown Sugar flavor recipe that I can easily throw together in 10 minutes or less and have enough to last for the next several weeks.  I love that I can customize how much sugar and other ingredients go into it. I also love that the cost to make this is low versus buying those little packets. And if you MAKE your brown sugar, the cost is lower still. (Indeed, you can very easily make your own brown sugar. Who knew?!)

Having all the ingredients mixed together in bulk is convenient for a large family, a small family, families without a lot of time in the morning, families that like a nice breakfast spread, and everyone else in between.

To cook, I never measure how much I put in our bowls; I just scoop or pour some into a bowl and run it under a low stream of water from the sink faucet while I sort of swirl the oats around in the bowl.

At the moment when the oats stop sticking to the bowl and swish around freely with the water, I know I have enough liquid to pop it in the microwave for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes and stir.

I  bury a couple of ice cubes in each of the kids’ bowls after they come out of the microwave to speed up the cooling process. We enjoy eating this oatmeal with a handful of raisins, fresh fruit slices, a small handful of chocolate chips, or with a simple splash of milk.
